Grade 1-2 Term 2 2017
Grades 1 and 2 will continue to build on the reading skills of fluency, expression, comprehension and retell. They will continue to learn the reading and spelling of the high frequency words and use the SMART spelling program to understand common letter combinations and patterns.
The foci of our writing program this term will be narrative and exposition text. We will continue to perfect these through our VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation) and Big Write program. Through library sessions, the children will learn more about literature by studying several accomplished authors, including our own Mr Mark Carthew!
This term the students in Grades 1 and 2 will begin to work in streamed groups for one session a week to further develop and extend their mathematical thinking. The students will continue to be exposed to the different Problem Based Learning strategies available for use when trying to solve mathematical equations. This term’s focus will be the strategy of ‘Draw a Picture or Diagram’.
The first weeks of term will focus on the second component of our “Then and Now” inquiry unit. The children will learn about the settlement and development of Berwick. We will investigate the important people of Berwick and a local historian from the Narre Warren Library will visit all grades and present an informative talk.
The second inquiry unit “Think It, Build It, Fix It” will integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities. This unit will give students the opportunity to use creative, imaginative and inventive thinking to help design, build and make changes to a simple machine. They will explore everyday materials and ways of moving objects. Our excursion to the Lego Education Centre, Docklands is sure to be a highlight for the children.
We will continue to meet with our buddy grades on a regular basis. We will share lunches together and take part in shared activities.
The grade 1 and 2 students are also invited to join our Garden Club.
Term 1 Overview Grade 1 and 2.
The grade 1 & 2 students will spend the first few weeks of Term 1 getting to know their classmates and establishing class rules and routines. They will complete the ‘You Can Do It – Getting Started’ unit of work to help with the realisation of why becoming a lifelong learner is important. They will set individual learning goals and discuss how they will go about achieving these.
The students will then move on to the first part of our inquiry unit, ‘Then and Now’. This unit looks at differences in family structures and roles today, and how these have changed or remained the same over time. It explores the impact of changing technology on people’s lives – at home and in the ways they worked, communicated and played in the past. The highlight of this unit will be our ‘Grandparents’ Day’ where we will participate in, and reflect on, games of the past with our older friends and relatives. A discussion as to whether the games of today are better than those of the past will be held – an interesting debate we’re sure!
The children will practise recount and narrative text types and will revise and use their VCOP strategies to enhance their writing. They will continue to learn the reading and spelling of the most frequently used words.
Differentiated mathematical tasks, in both number and measurement strands, will be provided for all students across the area. Hands-on and digital technology resources will be used to support their learning.
This year we introduce S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to the Victorian Curriculum. The grade 1 & 2 students will put their creative talents to the test to plan and then construct water slides – perfect for our summer conditions!
