Berwick Lodge Primary School is celebrating it's 20th anniversary this year. It was established in 1990 in the South Eastern Growth corridor of Melbourne. The initial enrolment of 200 pupils quickly grew and has remained at the current population of over 700. Our school logo depicts the Helmeted Honey Eater - regarded as Australia's rarest bird species, with one of its three acknowledged remaining habitats being on the eastern border of the City of Casey.

Indonesian Festival Report

indo_fest_09

On Saturday the 24th of October, one child from each grade six grade was going to the 2009 Indonesian Cultural Festival at Federation Square in Melbourne. I was chosen from 6D, Mark Morante from 6K, Maddy Day from 6Z, and Hayden Foster from 6W. We were guided on the day by Bui Daely. At the start, there were some dances, with the dancers wearing very intricate and effective costumes. The festival was full of white stalls, each stall representing a town or a ministry (e.g. East Kalimantan, Ministry of Youth and Sports). It was much neater than I thought it would be. After the dances, there was a cracker eating competition, without our hands. My friend Kristen and I, Mark and Hayden and some of their family all went the first time, Maddy and some of their families went the second. After that we went on to look at all the stalls with their beautiful products. We had been given $10 from the school to spend. After we had a look around, we went to the food stalls by the river and had lunch on the grass. When we went back to the stalls, we were allowed to start buying souvenirs. I got lots, like a fan and a statue of an elephant for my class. We had green-screen photos put on a bookmark to make it look like we were with an orang-utan, and we tried our hand at batik painting (which didn’t work well) and bracelet making (which worked very well). I had a fantastic time at that festival, and I would like to thank Bui Daely for guiding us on the day, and giving me and my friend the chance to go to the festival on that day.

Melbourne Zoo Visit - by Grade 3/4 L

a compilation letter

Dear Ben

I am in Grade 3/4L and we visited the zoo on Wednesday the 14th of October. I am writing this letter to thank you for your lesson on lucky and unlucky animals.

I already knew that a tortoise lives on land and a Red Tailed Cockatoo has red on it's tail and that's where it gets the name. I already knew that the harp seal was hunted for it's beautiful white fur and I knew the Shingle Back Lizard had a head shaped like a tail to confuse the birds.

I learnt that there was once 10 grasslands in Victoria. Now there's only 1 grassland in the whole of Victoria. I didn't know that the Red Tailed Cockatoo needs hollows to live in and I learnt that a tree hollow takes about 100 years to grow. I learnt a Bilby is so very shy and that I probably won't see one ever again.

Thank you for a great lesson
